From new hires and promotions to industry awards, here’s a roundup of achievements by businesses and individuals in the greater Ann Arbor area:
• Schiff Hardin attorney Steven Cernak, of counsel in Schiff Hardin’s Antitrust and Trade Regulation Group, was nominated to become a council member of the American Bar Association Section of Antitrust Law for a three-year term beginning in August. Cernak is one of five section members to receive the council member nomination. Schiff Hardin LLP is a general practice law firm with offices in Ann Arbor, Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Lake Forest, New York, San Francisco and Washington.
• • Ann Arbor's Truven Health Analytics, formerly the healthcare business of Thomson Reuters, May 2 announced a five-year accreditation from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence for content development processes for the Micromedex Medication Management product. The NICE Accreditation Advisory Committee found that Truven Health Analytics has "a robust process for producing the content in its database used in clinical decision support products."
• Lena Schumacher of Ypsilanti is a finalist to win a $1,500 college scholarship through the SuretyBonds.com Small Business Success Student Scholarship Program. Schumacher was chosen as one of 10 finalists from a pool of more than 500 applicants. To apply, Schumacher submitted an essay about how her experience with small business has shaped her into the person she is today. Schumacher chose to write about her experience with Affordable Photos by Jeff, a photography business her parents formerly owned.
• University of Michigan Provost Philip Hanlon and David Cohen, the John Dewey Collegiate Professor of Education at the School of Education, have been named as fellows by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. AAAS is a society that recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions in scholarly and professional fields. Hanlon and Cohen are among 198 new members.
• MichBio, the biosciences industry association in Michigan, headquartered in Ann Arbor, recently announced that two of its member companies were among those recognized at the Michigan 50 Companies to Watch for 2013 event in Lansing in early May. The award-winning MichBio member companies are: Embedded Logix Inc., a technological design and development firm located in Shelby Township, and Genemarkers, a Kalamazoo-based genomics service provider. Nominees are judged on factors including exceptional entrepreneurial leadership, competitive advantage, and demonstrable growth in sales and employee base.
• A flag commemorating a Con-way Freight employee's military service will be displayed at the company's headquarters in Ann Arbor. U.S. Army Reserve Staff Sgt. Brian McCleskey, a driver sales representative for Con-way Freight, has served two tours of duty with the Army Reserve in Kuwait and Afghanistan. May 2, in order to thank the company for supporting the U.S. military and veterans, Staff Sgt. McCleskey honored his employer with a presentation of an American flag that flew with the nation's soldiers during a combat mission aboard a U.S. Air Force F-16CM over Afghanistan. At a ceremony held at Con-way Freight's service center in Decatur, Ala., company officials also recognized Staff Sgt. McCleskey for his service to the country, and accepted the commemorative flag.
• The Rotary Club of Ann Arbor recently made grants to 11 area nonprofit organizations totaling $45,000. This year, the club received requests from 52 area nonprofit organizations. After review, the following organizations best matched the program goals and will receive funding Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum, Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, Avalon Housing, Corner Health Center, Interfaith Hospitality Network at Alpha House, Leslie Science & Nature Center, Ozone House, Peace Neighborhood Center, SOS Community Services, Washtenaw County Youth Center and Wild Swan Theater. Programs funded by the Rotary Club of Ann Arbor serve thousands of young people through programs run by area nonprofits including those representing health and human services, education, arts and culture.
