At the awards dinner, held on May 21 in Ann Arbor, HVA received a special tribute from the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services. Two CAAS representatives presented the re-accreditation award in honor of HVA's 20th year of meeting all the CAAS standards for excellence in the ambulance service industry.

Also during the ceremony, HVA presented its Life Saving Award to four police officers from the Ann Arbor Police Department for their rescue of several residents from an apartment building fire. The officers, Roman Morrow, David Ried, Jeffrey Shafer and Peter Tsangaris, were first on the scene and braved thick smoke to evacuate the residents.

Another community award, the HeartSafe Award, was presented to the Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC) for having AEDs in their building, on all boats and taken on all field work; having personnel trained in CPR and AED use available in all environments; and regularly practicing cardiac arrest protocols for cardiac emergencies in all environments. Part of the U.S. Geological Survey, the GLSC conducts aquatic research on the Great Lakes. GLSC safety coordinator Linda Begnoche accepted the award.

HVA also honored included five full-time employees from several company divisions who were serving as this year's Stars of Life. They are as follows: Paramedic Brad Vanderlooven from Western Operations; EMT Ernie Cameron from Eastern Operations; Administrative Assistant Kristen Collins from Support Operations; Patient Accounts Representative Alicia Keaton from Administration; and Ann Arbor resident and paramedic Eric Marshall from Central Operations. The "Stars" were selected by management from a pool of applicants who received "exceeds standards" performance appraisals in the past year.

Other award winners included employees who received professional achievement and safe driving awards. Paramedics celebrating 25 years with the company, Russ Comfort, Jennifer DeVoe and Chuck Rork, were also honored.
