SOS was founded in 1970 by Eastern Michigan faculty and students to help residents of Washtenaw County. Originally called Students Offering Support, the organization was initially located on EMU's campus and offered a 24-hour crisis phone line. The organization, now located in downtown Ypsilanti, has expanded thanks to partnerships with various organizations such as Eastern Michigan, local businesses and social service agencies and works to prevent and end homelessness in the county.
