It’s official: Nordstrom Rack, the off-price retail division of the Nordstrom Inc. department chain, is opening its first Ann Arbor location.

The Seattle-based department chain confirmed it plans to open a 30,000-square-foot store in Arborland Center by spring 2013.

"We are excited to have Nordstrom Rack join our strong lineup of tenants that serve Ann Arbor and the surrounding areas," said Ira Shwartz of AmCap Properties, the owner of Arborland, in a statement. "Nordstrom Rack's presence in Arborland Center will be a wonderful complement and fits within our strategic vision of bringing great retailers to our shopping centers."

The space, most recently occupied by Circuit City, has been vacant for three years after the electronic store liquidated.

It’s situated on the west end of Arborland, between Famous Footwear and Petco. It’s located near the former Borders store — which was replaced by beauty superstore Ulta and five below, a discount retailer that targets teens and pre-teen customers.

Nordstrom, founded as a shoe store in 1901, operates 231 stores in 31 states, which includes 110 Nordstrom Rack locations. There are Nordstrom department stores in Troy, Novi and Clinton Township. There are Nordstrom Rack stores in Troy and Grand Rapids.

The Rack stores carry “on-trend merchandise from Nordstrom stores and Nordstrom.com at 50 to 60 percent off original Nordstrom prices,” according to the company’s website.
