Area stores are starting their "Black Friday" shopping extravaganzas early this year — in some cases, as early as 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Downtown merchants in the greater Ann Arbor are also offering "Midnight Madness" days and other special shopping events. • Nov. 30: Ann Arbor Midnight Madness, sponsored by the Main Street Area Assocation. Shops are open late, many until midnight. Santa will be visiting from 7-9 p.m.
• Nov.30: Ypsilanti hosts the annual Starlight Shopping Spree and Christmas tree lighting, with holiday activities from 6-8 p.m. and many shops open late.

• Amazon.com releases new "Black Friday" deals every hour starting Nov. 19 and running until the end of Black Friday. Cyber Monday deals at amazon.com start Nov. 25.
• Walmart offers special discounts to shoppers who follow or "like" them on Facebook and Twitter.
