Amy Kilbourne — associate director of the Serious Mental Illness Treatment Resource and Evaluation Center, part of the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System’s Center for Clinical Management Research, and associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Michigan Medical School — was named a recipient of the 2012 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers.

The PECASE awards, established in 1996, go to "the most meritorious scientists and engineers whose early accomplishments show the greatest promise," nominated by 11 federal agencies. Kilbourne is one of 96 recipients for this year's PECASE awards.
Kilbourne's research focuses on improving medical and psychiatric outcomes for persons with mood disorders through integrated care models. As part of that work, she has proposed and implemented new psychosocial interventions for bipolar disorder that combine care management and behavioral medicine.

Her award marks the second consecutive year that a researcher from the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System has received the award. She traveled to Washington D.C., in late July to receive the award from President Barack Obama.
